Man, Sub-creator, the refracted Light
Through whom is splintered from a single White
to many hues, and endlessly combined
in living shapes that move from mind to mind.

- J.R.R Tolkien, Mythopoeia.
(A poem he wrote for C.S. Lewis)

A Time for Everything

These pieces were produced for an exhibition at the Wyndham Cultural Centre entitled “A Time for Everything”. It was organised by some friends from a relating church in Melbourne, and featured some stunning works of art inspired by the Biblical passage in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.

I contributed four pieces, three poems and an audio-visual item. You can read more about that here.

A Time for War

Our media, governments, and popular culture often portray war as something less horrific and more glamorous than it really is. The true act of war is gruesome and soul-destroying for all involved, including the generations of those left in its wake.

Ecclesiastes distinguishes between what is done “under heaven” (in and by God’s will), and what is done “under the sun” (in and by the will of man). The Bible allows for times of war, but only when it is done “under heaven”.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.
- Ecclesiastes 9:18

A Time to be Silent

Delicate lights adorn a dark sky
A cool and tranquil presence
No human voice disturbs
The busyness of man fades away
And the earth sleeps

The plants breathe
The trees stretch their limbs
The shy bud reveals itself
And whispers are heard
The secret sounds of the night

The soul revives it’s peace
Hope and faith sow their seed
And glimpse what is hidden in flesh
The gentle light and not the glare
Reveals heart’s true form

Solitude finds us
Without our entertainment drug
And there is only the night
And what is revealed in stillness
And known in quiet

The treasure of the night.

A Time to Love

Straining with the weight of deity
I hold a lover in my arms
We are bound by more than promises
He wears my ring upon his brow

He drinks the wedding wine
And with his life he says “I do”
He wins his bride
He lifts the veil

“Beloved”
He calls out my name
“Beloved, Beloved”

He crosses the threshold
He carries me home
I hold a lover in my arms
We are bound by more than promises

A Time to Dance

When you look at me with those sad eyes
Your heart speaks louder than your words.
And all I want to do is hold you
And all you have to do is let me.

This dark season is turning -
Your dark night, your long dark night.
Leave the shallow edge and take a deep breath
Let your eyes see the day.

Don’t believe your heavy heart
Rest between my shoulders
And take my hand
I’ll teach you how to dance.
